How to Train Your Punches
There are three main things you need to focus on when you train your punches. These are form, speed and power. Each plays an important role in your punching and all three work together to ensure you won’t get injured, that your punches are powerful and that they are effective. If you lack in any of these three areas your punching will suffer.
Form
Form or technique is all about body position and what happens with your body during a punch. Each punch requires you to use your body in a different way. A jab is a punch that is usually followed quickly by another punch. Since it rarely stands on its own it is not a very powerful punch, but it does need to be fast. A hook also draws strength from the hips, but the body moves all at once, so being able to move your arm and hips in sync is essential. Speed
Speed is something you will work up to. When you start out you will simply be working on form since you do not want to throw a fast, hard punch with the wrong form and injure yourself. Once you get the proper form down you can begin to try to speed up your punches.
A perfect way to help train your punches for speed is to make use of resistance bands. These bands work against your body, making it have to work harder to throw a punch. Once you remove the bands you will notice a difference in just how fast you are able to throw a punch. Using a band or even just hand weight while practicing your punches will really help you speed them up.
You also will want to work on your foot work to help with speed. You should practice exercises that will help you learn to be lighter on your feet. Plyometrics are great for this and as a bonus these types of exercises will also give you a great cardiovascular workout which will give you more stamina when fighting.
Power
Everyone wants to throw a hard punch that will knock an opponent out. Power requires work and determination. You not only have to work on putting more power into your punches, but you have to build your muscles up so you have something to draw that power from.
You need to lift weights, along with doing leg exercises and exercises that build your core muscles. Remember power for your punches are coming from different parts of your body, not just your arms, so be sure your whole body is strong, so you can get the power behind your punches that you want.

You have to work on all the aspects of throwing a punch so you not only have fast and hard punches, but good all around punches. How To Throw A Hook Punch
A hook punch can be a devastating blow to an opponent. Knowing how to throw a hook gives you more ability in the ring. It is important to practice good form with a hook punch. Not having the proper form opens you up to injuries and since this punch is thrown with a lot of power that means injuries could be quite severe. The main goal of a hook punch is to knock your opponent out, so it is a punch that you will want to master.
The Basics
Learning how to throw a hook punch starts with understanding the basics of this punch. If you are a serious fighter than you know that a punch is not just a punch. It is not about just throwing fists at another person. With the hook punch the goal is to hit your opponent in the right spot and hopefully get a knock out.
A hook punch can be either a right or left punch. You start with one leg in front, and your body in a boxing stance. Your arm will be in a 90 degree angle as you swing it from the outside towards your opponents jaw, chin or ribs.

Do not let your arm do all the work. Practice over and over throwing all different types of punches until you are up to the power level where you want to be.

How To Punch On A Punching Bag
A punching bag is a common tool used to help improve skills and train. Most trainers will have a fighter work on the punching bag to help develop speed, skills and proper form. Form is essential when working with a punching bag since improper form can easily lead to injuries. To learn the correct way to punch on a punching bag you will need to understand form and then get some insight on how to properly use the bag to train.
Proper Form
There are a number of punches that you will use when you are working with a punching bag. These punches include the jab, cross, hook and uppercut. It is important that you execute each punch with precision. You have to carry out the punch with good form that will protect your hands, arms and fingers.
To properly execute a jab you will want to keep the speed fast and come at the bag from shoulder level. The jab is not a punch that requires a lot of power, so simply focus on building speed with your jabs. To throw jabs at a punching bag you should move around the bag throwing the punch quickly. Make sure the punch is coming from shoulder level and that your knuckles hit the bag.
For a cross you are coming across the body with a punch that comes quickly after a jab. The cross comes from the arm in the back when you are standing at an angle to the bag. This punch starts in the hip. You turn your back hop towards the bag while also turning your upper body and moving the arm to deliver the cross. The power form the cross comes from the force of your whole body being behind the punch. Your knuckles should make contact with the bag while your wrist, arm and should are held in line. You do not want any part of your arm to be out of line or risk injury.
A hook comes from the outside. This is a very strong punch and needs to be executed with precision. You are aiming at the jaw or chin of your opponent with this punch. To throw a hook at the bag you will be, again as with the cross, bringing the power from your body. Your hips move first and the punch is made with your arm from your shoulder to the knuckles.
The last punch you will be using on the punching bag is the uppercut. As the name suggests, this punch comes from below. The power here is from the gut. You are coming up at the bag. Your knees should be bent and your arm held into the body as you begin to move upwards with your body and with your arm.
Tips and Advice
When working with a punching bag you have to practice. You will want to start out with just getting the basic punches down. Make sure you perfect the form for each punch and that you understand where the power for the punch is coming from. This will help you to get in the habit of good form and minimize your risk of injury when punching. For added protection when working with a punching bag you should wear gloves or wraps on your hands.
Once you start working with the punching bag you will want to work on accuracy first. You need to make contact with the bag with every punch. Once you have accuracy down you can then move onto working on speed and power.
